Marvel Legends Retro 3.75" Figures

Last year I preordered three of the Hasbro Pulse exclusive Marvel Legends Retro 3.75" figure 2-packs, which I still haven't opened! I love the card art so much that I'm kind of just enjoying them that way for now. Yes, I sold off most all of my 3.75" Marvel Universe collection to make room for other things, but the retro style of these simpler figures really appeal to me.

Below, 3.75" Spider-Man and Electro with Marvel Legends 6" Retro Series Spider-Man and Electro- I have that entire wave of 6" Spider-Man Retro Series figures I've not opened either...

There was another 2-pack available of Iron Man and Black Panther, with metallic deco in limited edition foil packaging, but I opted for the Iron Man/Cyclops and Black Panther/Capt. America 2-packs...

This past March I bumped into Daredevil and Elektra, two characters that seemed to be unconventional choices so early in the line, giving me hope as to who might be coming in future waves. I really appreciate the inclusion of accessories for these two great looking figures...

And finally, I found Magneto and Human Torch this past weekend, just a couple weeks after finding Carol Danvers in her Ms. Marvel outfit. There is an Iceman and Hulk out there as well, the latter of which I'm particularly interested in. I have no idea how far this line will go, but there are a lot more characters I'd like to have in this style.

Marvel Legends All-New, All-Different Daredevil

I was always a fan of the highly coveted 2015 Hobgoblin Wave Daredevil in red, but was glad to get this updated version from the 2018 SP//dr Wave. Modeled after the All-New, All-Different. the wrapped forearms and laced boots make for a more interesting figure, in my opinion, and despite complaints from the collector community, I actually like the zig-zag pattern of the rope accessory. Like the other recent Daredevil figures, this one was built on the oft used Bucky Cap body, which Hasbro has got some serious mileage out of- it works fine, though some butterfly joints at the shoulders would have added to an acrobatic character like Daredevil. I found this sample for under half the retail priced shipped, without the box or SP//dr BAF part, which didn't interest me that much anyway.

Below, Daredevil spars with the recent 1st Appearance Deadpool...

I'd certainly recommend this Daredevil figure, now the only 6" version of the character in my collection after having recently sold off my 2009 Nemesis Series Daredevil. Matt Murdock only wore this black outfit briefly, but it captures the spirit of the character, and the sculpt upgrades sure add visual interest. I'm currently catching up on some of this Daredevil Vol. 5 from 2016, and enjoying it. The character has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity due to the popular Netflix series after 50+ years in publication, first appearing in 1964, a creation of writer Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett. Daredevil is one of Marvel's most unique characters, evoking a deep psychological aspect due to his disability as well as his profession as a lawyer. Because of this layered complexity, so many stories of the blind Devil of Hell's Kitchen have been told.

Marvel Legends 12" SDCC Exclusive Daredevil

A few months ago, this Marvel Legends 12" 2017 SDCC Exclusive Daredevil was  sixty bucks + shipping, but found it recently for under $45.00 shipped, so I took the dive. The accessories, beautiful box and 8 x 10" art cards included made this a special buy and welcome addition to my collection- check out the video:

As I understand, this Daredevil was built on the 12" Spider-Man buck, which I do not have, but I think the lean build fits the character well. There were complaints about Spider-Man's hips and lack of waist swivel, but this works fine for me- he can do plenty. Daredevil's butterfly joints at the shoulders and abdominal hinge have great range, and the torso hinge helps. And with ankle rockers and swiveled boot tops, the figure stands very naturally. The black-washed, laced boots, subtly metallic gauntlets, and masked head sculpt really sold me! The figure is based on art by Joe Quesada, also gracing the box and accompanying cards- I love the braille in relief on the back. Recommended!

Marvel Legends Daredevil by Hasbro

On a Marvel Legends kick at the end of this past January, I scored a good deal on this Daredevil by Hasbro. His modern, red suited variant had originally caught my eye, and while I know my enthusiasm for Daredevil's original outfit is not shared by all, I like this retro-cool version a lot!

He has an absurdly large number of articulation points, and the sculpt is meticulously detailed-  from the cloth folds in his costume down to the tread on his "waffle-stomper" boots. He's about as good as you could hope for in a mass-produced action figure- just great!

Above is Daredevil's profile in Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics: Marvel (1991, Marvel Entertainment Group, Inc.). I bought this about 14 yrs ago in a used book store when I moved to St. Louis- it's a 287 page hardback full of Marvel history, stories, character profiles, art & memorabilia. I love the artwork in it! It's probably not the definitive, most up to date survey on Marvel, but it's a fun book to crack open now and again... something fun from days gone by I wanted to share. It was pretty popular, and I wouldn't be surprised if many of you have it.

Marvel Famous Covers Daredevil

I scored my Marvel Famous Covers Daredevil on E-Bay for a mere $11.94- far less than I had seen him typically go for. Many hail the Hasbro Spiderman Origins Series Daredevil over my ToyBiz version, but I respectfully disagree. Though Toybiz reversed the crossing “DD” chest insignia, and gave him the dreaded mittens, I like his chunky rubber boots and bright red suit. His two part fighting baton, which tucks into a sheath strapped to his thigh was a nice touch as well, though he doesn't like to hold it. What a FUN toy!

Speaking of mittens, I’d like to make a public service announcement concerning the Marvel Famous Covers line: THE SOFT VINYL USED ON THESE FIGURES HAS A TENDENCY TO STICK TO THE WINDOW PANEL OF TOYBIZ’S PACKAGING, CAUSING IT TO TEAR. Such was the case with my Daredevil’s mittens- I wasn’t too concerned due to the price and my distaste for the said mittens/gloves. Though it was listed as “new” on E-Bay, the seller either neglected to check condition of the item, or simply realized I wouldn’t bother to return due to shipping costs. I hate to give a bad review, or be a squeaky wheel… what would YOU do?

While Daredevil doesn’t make my top twenty of all-time-favorite heroes, he is an intriguing figure due to the fact that he’s blind. One of my childhood friends had blind parents, and I was both fascinated and impressed at how well they got along raising their children, taking care of their household like anyone else- they didn’t have to flip around atop buildings, fighting bad guys to be an example to me of how one can overcome a handicap. When I stayed over at their house they took care of me as if I was their own child- feeding me, entertaining me, and disciplining me if I needed it.

Like Batman, Daredevil is a mortal who can be killed or injured as easily as the rest of us. But Matt Murdock does have superpowers, including a radar-like sense similar to echolocation and heightened sensitivity in his remaining four senses- both due to an accidental exposure to radioactive material that ironically left him blind. The “Man without Fear” uses these special abilities, as well as his mastery of martial arts to fight criminals in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York, including the Kingpin and Bullseye.

Make Mine Mini Marvel pt.3

In my last post, we took a closer look at the first five Marvel mini figures I picked up at Toys 'R Us this week- now let's examine the other pack!

Wolverine:
Logan is wearing his blue and yellow X-Men outfit here, his left set adamantium claws engaged, which are actually three separate tiny, thin slivers of plastic. Wow! How did they do that? Some smudging in the paint job, but lots of detail in both the brushwork and the sculpt. He's as tall as IronMan, which he really shouldn't be, but his scale in toys always seems to be taller than his original comic book stature.

Silver Surfer:
The Sentinel of The Spaceways seems much larger that most of the other mortals, mutants, and monsters in the group, but hey- he's an alien. His musculature definitely alien, but I like him. Nice face sculpt on this guy. I was really inspired to find out more about this seminal Marvel character recently, and scored a 10" ToyBiz version on E-Bay the other night, along with Marvel Essentials Silver Surfer Vol.1 from Amazon. It's gettin' crazy over here! J

Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman:
This is one of the coolest in the series, maybe the best. Some genius over at Marvel Toys said "Let's make the legs on the girl translucent, and then we'll fade into her outfit colors for her torso and head". Good idea.
I've never seen this approach on another action figure, and it works great! Both an excellent body sculpt paint job on this tiny cutie! Bravo!

Green Goblin:
Another stand out in this group of mini figures, this bad guy has an excellent sculpt with a lot of detail. One of only two villains in the series, the other being Magneto, Green Goblin shares the a unique distinction of a themed base with Silver Surfer. While Silver Surfer naturally sports a surfboard for his base, Green Goblin rides his bat shaped goblin glider- FUN!

Daredevil:
Matt Murdock is totally stooped over, so at eye level he's useless. His body is also noticeably larger than even Silver Surfer, making him completely out of proportion with the rest of this series, though I knew what to do with the photo opportunity!

...Oh, just a couple more... J

Overall, I was really glad to find these guys, and had a fun time visiting the toy store for the first time to buy TOYS as an adult! I had a lot of fun photographing and writing about them, though at $7.99 a five pack, they really should have thrown another villain or two in each pack. And if this series is said to be suffering from from a glaring design problem, it's inconsistency to my eye. It seems that two or three artists worked on these, painfully evident in the Daredevil figure, but also body sculpt detail across the board. They aren't bad or anything, just styled really differently among one another in the series.

Until we meet again, remember: enjoy yourself, take care of one another, play with TOYS and have FUN with your life! Next Week: Marvel Famous Cover Action Figures by ToyBiz!

Hey Mr. Postman!

More TOYS came in the mail today- Hooray!  J  Now, what could be better than that, Friends?

My Marvel Famous Covers 9” Daredevil- I’ve had a couple of these Famous Covers dolls, er ummm… action figures come with parts of the soft vinyl gloves torn from sticking inside the 15 year old packaging. In both cases, I paid a pretty low price so I wasn’t to upset. In Daredevil’s case, the damaged was done to his “mittens” which I didn’t like anyway- I’m currently looking into some better replacement gloves online, so if you have any suggestions please share. I paid $11.94 for him (that INCLUDED shipping), so it wouldn’t be worth the time returning him… I resent somewhat that he was listed as NEW on Amazon.com *sigh*. I really like the figure anyway, so hey- “don’t worry, be happy”.

I could not resist the 9” Hasbro Joker… he was just too much fun, and has accessories, including but not limited to a “surprise package” that he can pop open with his cane!
($24.95, included shipping).

And last but not least, the Kenner Legends of Batman “Batman Vs. Catwoman” 12” action figure set- FUN!
($19.69, included shipping)
Hey, it said ages five and up… J
