Marvel Legends Age of Apocalypse Magneto

To my shame, I still haven't read X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, so I had little attachment to the last couple of Marvel Legends Age of Apocalypse waves. I found some of the characters to be just interesting variations on some classic X-Men characters, such as this Magneto- he's so close in design to the character's original look, that I just bought him to use as a regular Magneto. No BAF parts were included, but the figure has an extra set of fists, electrical accessories, and a helmeted head.

I do have another Marvel Legends Magneto that I'm quite fond of, ironically from the Apocalypse BAF Wave. I'm pretty sure they share the same buck from their feet to their shoulders, only with different capes and heads. Hasbro has produced a couple other Magneto figures in the Marvel Legends line between these, on the House of X Magneto, and the other a traditional Magneto in a 3pk with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but I'm happy enough with these two.

In the Age of Apocalypse reality, Magneto founded the X-Men to avenge the death of his friend Charles Xavier by the hand of his own son Legion, and fight against the tyranny of Apocalypse. Magneto has been both a villain and hero in the comics, even assisting the X-Men at times.

Below, Age of Apocalypse Magneto with some other X-Men in my Marvel Legends collection:

And finally, Age of Apocalypse Magneto with my Marvel Legends 3.75" Retro Series Magneto, and 9" ToyBiz Marvel Famous Covers Magneto. Both of those figures are based on Magneto's original look, but again, the Age of Apocalypse Magneto is so close that he could certainly round out the spot in your Marvel Legends X-Men lineup if you are in need. Recommended!

Marvel Legends Retro 3.75" Figures

Last year I preordered three of the Hasbro Pulse exclusive Marvel Legends Retro 3.75" figure 2-packs, which I still haven't opened! I love the card art so much that I'm kind of just enjoying them that way for now. Yes, I sold off most all of my 3.75" Marvel Universe collection to make room for other things, but the retro style of these simpler figures really appeal to me.

Below, 3.75" Spider-Man and Electro with Marvel Legends 6" Retro Series Spider-Man and Electro- I have that entire wave of 6" Spider-Man Retro Series figures I've not opened either...

There was another 2-pack available of Iron Man and Black Panther, with metallic deco in limited edition foil packaging, but I opted for the Iron Man/Cyclops and Black Panther/Capt. America 2-packs...

This past March I bumped into Daredevil and Elektra, two characters that seemed to be unconventional choices so early in the line, giving me hope as to who might be coming in future waves. I really appreciate the inclusion of accessories for these two great looking figures...

And finally, I found Magneto and Human Torch this past weekend, just a couple weeks after finding Carol Danvers in her Ms. Marvel outfit. There is an Iceman and Hulk out there as well, the latter of which I'm particularly interested in. I have no idea how far this line will go, but there are a lot more characters I'd like to have in this style.

Marvel Legends Magneto (2018 Apocalypse BAF Wave)

This modern version of the Marvel Legends Magneto was from the 2018 Apocalypse, inspired by the character's look from Uncanny X-Men Vol. 4 (Marvel, 2016), and drew some criticism from collectors who wanted an updated classic Magneto. I picked him up loose for cheap on eBay, won over by the unhelmeted portrait featuring Magneto's white mane of hair. Also included were a translucent pair of hands and lighting effects accessories.

For whatever reason, I never posted photos of this figure on the Super-DuperToyBox, circling back here to do so while doing a post on the Hasbro Power Rangers Goldar. While highlighting links to other figures included in that post, I realized I'd never posted about Magneto on the blog. While the 10" Toybiz Marvel Famous Covers Magneto is my all-time favorite, I do like this figure- in spite of the initial disappointment in his 2018 release, Magneto has become somewhat desirable by collectors more recently.

I won't go into a great deal more regarding this figure, as I originally picked him up to complement future posts on Marvel Legends X-Men figures. No disrespect to this great Marvel character, but he serve's his secondary purpose in my Marvel Legends collection fine. While not what would be considered a fan's pick, there's a lot to like here. Later on, Hasbro released a classic Magneto in a 3-pk with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver that looked nice enough, but my interest in the other figures was peripheral at best. Hence, this is the Magneto in my Marvel Legends collection...

First Class Magneto & Mystique MiniMates

I got these on clearance for about five bucks, and looking at this particular series, I can understand why. There is a sameness about them that may not excite like the aesthetic variety throughout the regular Marvel MiniMates series. But I loved the flightsuits worn by the fledgling X-Men team in the 2011 X-Men: First Class movie, which was one of the best superhero movies I'd seen in awhile. If I'd seen the Beast/Azazel set, I would have picked them up too, but I'm not surprised there were none left. Magneto & Mystique are the other interesting set in this series, for his accessory, and her coloring.

Young Raven Darkholme (later known as Mystique) felt rejected by childhood friend Charles Xavier, but Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) told her she was perfect the way she was- a magnificent specimen. "If I looked like you, I wouldn't change a thing." This psychological foreshadowing was well played in the movie, uniquely reimagining her roots in the Brotherhood of Mutants under the leadership of Magneto. Mystique's dark blue skin and red hair make her visually interesting, and her long history at odds with the X-Men make her an interesting character.

Michael Fassbender did some excellent acting as Magneto- a wonderful performance! Diamond Select did a good job in his angular chin and clean-cut looks within the MiniMates style. He has a slightly different paint scheme on the arms and torso. But it's the helmet that makes this figure rock! It protects him against psionic attacks by telepaths such as Xavier- made by the Soviet Union for Sebastian Shaw, Erik took the helmet after killing him in revenge of his mother's murder in a Nazi concentration camp. Xavier and Lehnsherr's complex relationship, at odds with the those who misunderstand them, was dramatically told in the movie. Weaved within the Cuban Missile Crisis and their fight against Sebastian Shaw, the fellow mutants are ultimately estranged on grounds of their tolerance toward the human race.

I love these two MiniMates, but the other other 2-packs in the X-Men: First Class series available on the pegs didn't reach out & grab me- even at $5. Check out Lemonjuice McGee's review on this set at MTV Geek!

Marvel Universe Wave 16

I found these Wave 16/Series 3 Marvel Universe figures about a week ago at Target on sale for $6.99 each- wasn't dying to get these, but at that price I went for it. They are all good characters I've read about in the last year, and I've been on a X-Men kick lately.  They turned out more interesting freed from their packaging.

Ultimate Magneto:
I like the color scheme on this Magneto, styled after his look in the Marvel "Ultimate" universe. I've heard some criticism of the paint apps on his face, and yeah it looks a little dirty, but not all that bad. I like the details in his outfit, defined in dark paint. His helmet is sculpted well and the "blowing cape" sculpt is unique, it's shoulder harness painted in a contrasting glossy black. I really like him- he looks like a baddie  :D

Absorbing Man:
I looked pretty hard for the black/metallic variant, but to no avail. Hasbro should've made them all like that- it looks so much more impressive. Still, this is a fun figure with the jail pants & wrecking ball. The paint apps on the flesh is nice as well, adding definition to his muscles and overall color to his pallor. What really stuck out on this guy was his individually sculpted fingers, which have tiny fingernail indentations- really detailed!

Iceman:
I was the least enthralled by Bobby here, and while somewhat plain he's more interesting up close. His color is a nice icy shade, and they painted his eyes the same silver as his boots/gloves. Again, any more X-Men are welcome to my Marvel Universe collection.

I found these two Iceman figures while shopping the dollar comic bin at BAM! on Tuesday- pretty cool as I'd just bought an Iceman, but I didn't buy them...

Another Wolverine?? This makes six I have, and Slangards recently claimed Hasbro produced  35 Hasbro Wolverines in this scale to date, painstakingly listing them on Joint Junkie!  I still wanted this Astonishing Wolverine- the snarling expression on his face is great, and there's some nice detail in the outfit, particularly in the sculpted seams, gauntlets & boots. The paint apps on the flesh is nice as well, adding definition to Logan's bulging biceps.

Marvel Universe Wave 6 Wolverine, Wave 16 Wolverine, Sentinel Wolverine...

Astonishing Wolverines: 9" Hasbro Wolverine, 3 3/4" Marvel Universe Wolverine, 2 3/4" Marvel Heroes & Villains Wolverine mini-figure:
