Marvel Legends Sam Wilson Captain America

This Target exclusive Sam Wilson Captain America is a re-release of a figure that came in a 3pk some years ago- that figure did not include wings, nor the large, handsome shield unique to this character. There were complaints about the cash-grab nature of this figure, but I never had the first release, so I was happy to see him.

I had not realized how many parts Sam shared with my Marvel NOW! Captain America from a decade ago- I'm still fond of that figure, and they make a great pair...

Below, Sam Wilson Capt. America with my Marvel Legends Falcon ...

And finally, Sam Wilson Captain America with my Marvel Legends

In spite of the collector community's misgivings regarding this release, I was glad to finally have a Sam Wilson Captain America with his wings. I have an MCU Sam Wilson/Steve Rogers Captain America 2pk Hasbro gave me that frustratingly does not include wings- an exclusion that made no sense and consequently sold poorly. For myself, this release feels like a wrong made right.

Marvel Legends Gamerverse Avengers Joe Fixit Wave

Initially, my interest in this Marvel Legends Gamerverse Avengers Joe Fixit Wave was primarily confined to Jocasta and Kang, but I went back for the other four using some Amazon points I'd accumulated. I'm glad I did, because in spite of having to buy another Gamerverse Iron Man and Captain America, I thoroughly enjoyed this wave. Check out the video:

As I said, buying another Gamerverse Iron Man and Captain America wasn't high on my priority list, but I was impressed with them in person; the Tony Stark and Steve Rogers head sulpts included took them to another level, and I loved the new colorways. Pleasantly surprised by these two...

Below Iron Man with the Gamerverse Starboost Armor Iron Man and regular Gamervese Iron Man, and Captain America with his initial release in blue. I love all these side by side...

I have no emotional attachment to Thunderstrike, but there are some nice aspects to this figure; I'm usually more a fan of neutral face sculpts, but the screaming face on this is fantastic! Below, Thunderstrike with my Beta Ray Bill and Marvel 80th Anniversary Classic Thor...

There is a serious shortage of villains in my Marvel Legends collection, so I was thrilled to see a comic book based Kang in this wave. I loved my childhood Secret Wars Kang, and Hasbro did a knock-out job on this classic character- lots of new parts! Below, Kang with the magnificent Dr. Doom we got earlier this year...

Jocasta was one of the figures that interested me in this wave, due in large part to her head sculpt, and less with any attachment to the character. She pairs well with my Iron Man 3 Wave Ultron, her creator and captive love interest, created in 1977 by artist George Perez and writer Jim Shooter...

Falcon is a bedrock Avengers team mate, so I wasn't disappointed in finally having one in my Marvel Legends collection. I like the engineering od the wings, pegged securely into rectangular slots on the undersides of the arms, the same used recently on that Demogoblin Wave Classic Vulture...

This wasn't the comic book Joe Fixit that first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #326 (1986), nor was it a repaint of the recent Kingpin figure we've now seen twice; this is a unique and very cool Marvel Legends BAF. Well, the arms, legs, and shoes may be reuse of Kingpin's parts (?), but the rest is new. It's possible we will get a comic book based Joe Fixit from Hasbro in the future, but I hope it's in a tuxedo, packed with a Wolverine as Patch, just like in Wolverine #8 (1989)!

I didn't buy the recent Gray Hulk or Red Hulk, basically repaints of the Marvel 80th Anniversary Classic Hulk with a new head sculpt. I'm glad to have another Hulk that is unique; I'm kind of a Hulk collector, and have a modest grouping, varying in size and manufacture.

I did enjoy this Marvel Legends wave- I don't often an entire wave to get the BAF, and am glad Hasbro has started rereleasing larger BAFs as "deluxe" and Vintage Wave releases so we can have alternative ways to get figures we want. If they'd stop confounding us with retailer exclusive releases, that would be great.

Comic Shop News 2014 Fall Preview

I thrilled at the recent and fantastic Comic Shop News 2014 Fall Preview, featuring Sam Wilson (formerly The Falcon) taking on Steve Roger's duties as Capt. America, According to Comic Shop News,  issue #25 of Captain America will detail the passing of the mantel, Captain America & the Mighty Avengers #1 will see Sam assemble the Avengers with a whole new mission statement, and All-New Captain America #1 will gather Cap's gallery of rogues united by Hydra to attempt the takedown of this yet untested Capt. America & Nomad! I stopped reading recent Captain America title after he escaped Arnim Zola & Dimension Z, but must assume Ian will continue his role as Nomad, assumed after having lost contact with adoptive father Steve Rogers in the tumultuous getaway. I don't know if you are one comfortable with change, but this all looks very interesting to me ...!

TRU 18 Marvel MiniMates

These TRU 18 were not plentiful in the area, and by the time I got to see any, they were on clearance already. And I never did see the Winter Soldier/Hydra Elite 2-pack. I was happy to get these at under three bucks each though, so TRU's disorganization/distribution issues worked out in my favor. The last several posts on the Super-DuperToyBox have been about MiniMates, and there will be more to follow. I like Diamond Select's variety among the line, the Marvel MiniMates my focus here, where I enjoy the challenge up getting up close and personal with these diminutive figures. Shooting dramatic images of a 2 1/2" action figure is more difficult than a  larger six or seven inch figure, but lighting and vantage point can make up for lack of size and articulation. Lotsa fun!

Though I've not read the recent Age of Ultron series, I loved seeing this gold Ultron drone, supposedly one of many Ultron used to conquer the Earth in the story. It's a for more vanilla buck than the detailed Ultron included in the Age of Ultron box set, but thankfully had the translucent head under it's helmet. Like DC's Brainiac, Ultron is such a great villain for his mechanically cold cruelty- the same traits that made the Terminator character so frightening.

Ultron Drone with Age of Ultron Iron Man...

As with other toy lines, Diamond puts out a lot of Wolverine MiniMates- like Iron Man, Wolvie gets a lot of room on the pegs at retail, but this is the only TRU 18 2-pack I'd seen. I did see the more recent Wolverine movie series 2-packs, and a couple other Wolverines in other recent 2-packs, but not this one. This is a great variant costume for Logan, his mask hanging behind the head to expose his wild mane. I love the black/grey outfit with highlights of yellow, though I admittedly like the character in most all his incarnations.

Age of Ultron Wolvie with Astonishing Wolverine...

AU Wolvie and Iron Man battle the Ultron Drone... !

There's an Armored Capt. America that was sold in the Cap Through the Ages box set Diamond released three years ago that I covet, but the asking price seems high on the secondary market. This Fighting Chance Capt. America has some of the same armored look I liked in the other, but with military fatigue-style flak jacket overlay. The holster for his handgun holds the weapon securely, as do Cap's hands. His shield fits onto a peg atop the left forearm, like the other Capt. America MiniMates,  but he has an additional peg on his back to carry it. His colors are bright and fun- he's a great variant on a popular character.

Fighting Chance Capt. America with Ultimate Capt. America...

Fighting Chance Cap got a great 2-pack partner in this classic Falcon, also his fighting partner in the comics. I happen to be reading an adventure featuring these two characters in Jack Kirby's Capt. America: Bicentennial Battles right now, so the timing couldn't be better. I know we are going to see this character in one of Marvel's upcoming films, and this is the second new action figure of Sam Wilson I've seen.

Diamond gave his wings the same translucent treatment we saw in the Marvel Universe Falcon by Hasbro, the upper segment a separate arm accessory banded onto the bicep, the lower molded onto the hand- the articulation works well this way for easy posing. His bird, Redwing, fits onto his forearm with a loop molded where his feet would be. He's a great MiniMate! Falcon with Emma Frost...

Once a social activist turned professional criminal out of the bitterness of tragedy, Sam met Steve Rogers by chance when cought in the crossfire of conflict between Red Skull and Capt. America while en route to a big score in Rio. The two heroes went on to share title billing in Capt. America's comic for most of the 70s, and played an ongoing support character to the series throughout the 90's and beyond, where he is now part of the newly expanded Avengers roster in the Marvel NOW! imprint.

Thursday Toy Haul- More Marvel Universe!

Last Sunday's toy hunt produced only a Marvel Universe Silver Surfer- it surely entertained me, but as I drove from place to place, I was seeing the same old stuff every place. Sure there were clearance deals everywhere, but not much I really wanted. After the morning workout today however, a spontaneous trip to Target more than made up for that...

*Marvel Universe Skarr, Falcon, Dr. Doom, & Apocalypse
Now I had seen Falcon out on the town Sunday, but couldn't commit- I went back out to take another look this morning and saw the other three! FRESH STOCK- what a thrill! Finding that Apocalypse was like finding a gold brick...

ALSO... Last week I got some other action figures in the mail I didn't tell you about  :)   Wanna guess what they were... ??

*Marvel Universe Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Man (House of M), & World War Hulk
Yes, I had already been on the hunt for some of these earlier Marvel Universe releases, and managed to snag a few at decent prices on eBay...

So that all turned out just peachy! I've been mad for that World War Hulk, and then finding Skarr today just set me off like a stick of dynamite- Bitchin'!  I've been on this incredible natural high for the last couple weeks that's hard to describe: working a lot & making some great sales, playing a lot of music, and the physical fitness regimen has made me feel obnoxiously alert & strong- I've only been sleeping six hours a night- maybe seven a couple nights a week. So this has all been a lot of fun  :)  I've already photographed World War Hulk & Skarr up above, so you'll be seeing those in a few hours  :)
