McFarlane DC Multiverse Demon Knight & Inque Batman Beyond

These were an impulse purchase last week, my action figure budget reserved mostly for Marvel Legends and MOTU Origins in the last year. I have a handful of McFarlane figures, and while I like a great deal of what they put out, the time and money I can devote does have limits. While these are both modern representations of which I'm unfamiliar, I'm a fan of both Batman Beyond and Etrigan the Demon.

I don't think I saw any of the four episodes of Batman Beyond featuring Inque, and question if this repaint of the Batman Beyond figure might be a stretch claim. Regardless, it's just a blue Batman Beyond to me, and a great figure! I had not heard of this Inque variant, and was taken by surprise, unsure what I was looking at.

An extra pair of grip hands, Batarang, and a fight stand were included. A lot of fans were not impressed with the wings on that Batman Beyond, and while I'm fine with these, I do wonder if the more pliable plastic will curl over time. The articulation is serviceable on this figure, and the joints offer the right amount of resistance- he can stand free no problem.

This Inque Batman Beyond reminded me of my Mattel DC Multiverse Batwing. I never read that New 52 Batwing title back in 2011, but did briefly follow a few of the other New 52 books. His first appearance was the fifth issue of  Batman Inc.by Grant Morrison, which I enjoyed thoroughly. I was shocked when Mattel lost their years-long license for DC to McFarlane and SpinMaster, and then DC Direct shuttered, the latter of which produced figures I covet to this day.

Below, Inque Batman Beyond with the other McFarlane Batman figures in my collection: the first, Detective Comics #1000 Batman, Hellbat, Flashpoint Batman, and Murder Machine Batman...

Though very different from the colorful Jack Kirby Etrigan, this update of the Demon wears armor and wields an intimidating sword, both fitting to the character's Camelot origins I thought. I bought it because of the impressive sculpting detail, but out of the package it's joints are not strong enough to overcome his terrible center of balance without the figure base. Additionally, the elbow articulation is severely limited- that combined with loose wrists make it challenging to pose the Demon Knight with his sword. I display most of my figures in a vanilla lineup, but collectors may need a flight stand if you plan to do much more with him.

While there are some unfortunate balance, articulation and joint issues, the tails on this figure are a standout. Mind you, many of these issues were present throughout DC Direct/DC Collectibles' years as well- the balance of form and function, fan expectation, and production in an action figure is daunting, I'm certain. I'm not a fan of the ball-hinge wrists and ankles on McFarlane's figures, visually or functionally, but at least they are largely hidden on the Demon.

I think the Demon pairs well with my McFarlane Witcher Geralt of Rivia  ...!

I picked up this fantastic hardback of Jack Kirby's The Demon some years ago, which is fascinating and bizarre. I'd love to see McFarlane produce a figure based on that! DC Direct produced a figure based on Etrigan's original look pretty recently in their Icons line though, and McFarlane may have prioritized the most current look because of that. Also may have been an editorial request.

McFarlane Toys also includes a collector card with their DC Multiverse figures, these featuring photos of the figures as opposed to art from the comics upon which they were styled, and a small bio on the verso. While I've kept all mine, they hold little interest for me. I'm largely happy with these figures, and am interested in some other McFarlane figures. I only paid $16.66 for the Batman Beyond during a sale at Target, the Demon Knight ringing up for just under $20. at Walmart. Problems aside, not a terrible value. Batman Beyond is superior to the Demon Knight in articulation/functionality by a mile, but the detail on the Demon is undeniable.

BootLego DC: Joker, Venom, Blue Beetle, Katana, & Batman Beyond

A few BootLego DC minifigs scored off eBay- the Katana & Blue Beetle were part of a new purchase, the others from a Batman set I bought at the end of 2015. I really liked the New 52 version of Katana, my favorite of this group. I have a DC Collectibles Katana in this outfit that I absolutely covet. I like the idea of Katana as a partner to Batman in the 2013-14 Beware the Batman animated series- fresh!

This new Batman Beyond minifig is barely so, the chest insignia and belt true to character, but exposed chin & red cape not so. He looks a lot like the black and red Batman I got with a BootLego Nightwing and Robin posted on here in Nov. 2015...

The Joker below is standard Lego Joker, but a nice and colorful rendition. Like Joker, this simple Bane minifig came with the Batman set I bought at the end of 2015. Though irrelevant to the character, his sighted assault rifle is a bonus.

I love the third, Jaimie Reyes Blue Beetle! My only complaint with this minifig is the neck post barely accommodating the wings and neck horns, an oft fugitive blue head the unfortunate result. Check out my 2013 post on the Batman: Brave and the Bold Blue Beetle Cosmic Crawler!

Joker and Venom would have a hard time fighting Katana, Batman Beyond, and Blue Beetle!

Batman Unlimited Series 1 Mighty Minis

I couldn't resist some more of these DC Mighty Minis! Perhaps it's the challenge of photographing these impossibly tiny 2" figures. I like their sculpt and stance, and they'll be fun to pose with other toys!

Mighty Minis Green Arrow:

Aside from Green Arrow being unarmed, I'm glad I went back for these- I'm particulary fond of the Batman Beyond's semi-translucent plastic. At $2.99, I paid less that the first few Mighty Minis I purchased- perhaps still a questionable value, but improved.

Sideshow One Sixth Batman Comparison Photos

There was so much to talk about with the outstanding Sideshow One Sixth Batman I picked up recently that I wanted to do another post of comparison pictures with other 1:6 scale Batman figures in my collection...

Sideshow Batman probably has most in common with my DC Direct Deluxe Batman, in his modern/classic styling and short cowl ears. Categorizing  this DC Direct as 1:6 scale is a bit of a stretch as he's really 13", While the DC Direct version seemed a little clumsy after working with the Sideshow, it didn't diminish my appreciation for the former, which I got at at a great price back in 2011...

My first serious 1:6 figure, the DC Direct Batman Beyond, has more in common proportionally to Sideshow Batman. I like the slender body and articulation on this DC Direct- the head sculpt is truly bizarre, and looks very little like the clenched teeth visage we know as Terry McGinnis from the animated shows & comics, but he's plenty of fun and has a lot of visual appeal...

Just for fun since I've been on a Batman kick lately, a shot of Sideshow Batman with my 10" Kai Play Arts Arkham City Batman, who also came with a grapple gun/cable accessory- a feature I appreciate. While the Play Arts Batman had it's issues, it's extreme detail and hyper stylization are impressive...

Weekend Haul

My brother turned me onto a great store, BAM!, this weekend that sell books, comics, used CDs & DVDs, and toys. They had all kinds of vintage figures of assorted variety, boxed/carded & loose which is something I don't see here a lot. They also had new & vintage comics, some pretty old collector's items as well. I loved it!  I picked up the two Batman Beyond animated movies pictured above with my DC Direct Deluxe Batman Beyond dolly, a Rush CD (Counterparts), 80 page Brave New World #1 comic (DC, 2006), and a DCUC Indigo Lantern Atom.

I'll be keeping an eye on that place, let me assure you  ;)  I also hit some other places this past week and found some great stuff, but I'll save that for future posts- let's just say this wasn't the half of it. It was a weekend full of great weather, shopping, social gatherings, and a 25th anniversary performance by my longtime rock band- way too much fun! I hope you took some time to relax and enjoy your life- more later!

Friday Toy Shopping

Decided to run around town a little this morning & see if there was anything new on the pegs, and I'm glad I did...

*DC SuperFriends HeroWorld Green Lantern figure by Fisher-Price
I had never seen this out on the town... has it just been released?? There was a really cool Mr. Freeze as well, but the Batman, Joker & Penguin just didn't impress me. I found him at Toys 'R Us near those cute little Imaginext SuperFriends toys I love so much... This is a FUN TOY- projectiles & moving parts!

*Justice League Batman and Batman Beyond
What can I say?? I love the style of these figures and have several of them in a shoebox which I had out last night.... just playing with them  :D  They don't stand up very well, have limited articulation, and are grossly overpriced- but I love them. Once again that little tucked away Target up the street had some gems- I about fell over when I saw the Batman Beyond, and was doubly blessed to find the black & grey Batman. One of each on the pegs, and they weren't there a couple weeks ago when I scored the equally elusive JLU Green Arrow- Hooray!  Also saw the JLU Captain Atom & Red Tornado I want, but I'll wait...

And finally, what I really went out for: another large Pioneer display box for my 1:6 DC Direct Green Lantern Corps dolly! Of course I had another 40% off Hobby Lobby coupon...  Bitchin'!

Well, that was sure A LOT of FUN- I'm bushed!  I'll show you some other stuff tomorrow, so stay tuned!
