Marvel Legends Black Panther (Wakanda Forever)

I wasn't sure I needed another Marvel Legends Black Panther figure until I saw this Wakanda Forever Wave Classic Black Panther, modeled after his Jack Kirby 1st appearance. It's the small, collared cape double strapped across his chest that makes it. This is another plastic-free figure from Hasbro, and though nervous to purchase off the peg at retail for fear of any unscrupulous figure-switching, the tape seal looked legitimate, so I took a chance. Like a lot of collectors, I don't like not being able to inspect my figure prior to purchase, but I do like the idea of less plastic floating in the ocean.

Below, Black Panther battles Klaw on my new NECA Street Scene Diorama ...!

Two other Black Panther figures in my collection I love are the caped Black Panther and Vibranium Black Panther, both Walmart Exclusives- both fantastic, but this new Panther is certainly the one I've always wanted....

Of course, this post would be incomplete without a shot of Black Panther without his wife, Ororo/Storm, later annulled. This Giant-Sized X-Men Storm that came in a 2-pack with Thunderbird is a stunner!

Below, Black Panther with Marvel Legends Retro-Card Hawkeye, 80th Anniv. Capt. America, Tigra, Walgreens Exclusive Thing, She-Hulk, and All New, All Different Daredevil... double back and see my post of the HUGE NECA Street Scene Diorama.

I passed on this entire Wakanda Forever Wave in the wild the first time I saw it, but returned a couple weeks later, shocked to find this Black Panther still there. I feel blue gloves/boots would have been more often seen for Black Panther's color accents and wonder how/when the variant will be released. I'm unsure if I'll buy any of the resto of the wave, full of movie figures, but they all look good.

Marvel Legends Retro 3.75" Figures

Last year I preordered three of the Hasbro Pulse exclusive Marvel Legends Retro 3.75" figure 2-packs, which I still haven't opened! I love the card art so much that I'm kind of just enjoying them that way for now. Yes, I sold off most all of my 3.75" Marvel Universe collection to make room for other things, but the retro style of these simpler figures really appeal to me.

Below, 3.75" Spider-Man and Electro with Marvel Legends 6" Retro Series Spider-Man and Electro- I have that entire wave of 6" Spider-Man Retro Series figures I've not opened either...

There was another 2-pack available of Iron Man and Black Panther, with metallic deco in limited edition foil packaging, but I opted for the Iron Man/Cyclops and Black Panther/Capt. America 2-packs...

This past March I bumped into Daredevil and Elektra, two characters that seemed to be unconventional choices so early in the line, giving me hope as to who might be coming in future waves. I really appreciate the inclusion of accessories for these two great looking figures...

And finally, I found Magneto and Human Torch this past weekend, just a couple weeks after finding Carol Danvers in her Ms. Marvel outfit. There is an Iceman and Hulk out there as well, the latter of which I'm particularly interested in. I have no idea how far this line will go, but there are a lot more characters I'd like to have in this style.

Marvel Legends Dora Milaje (Black Panther Wave 2)

I had to pick up at least one of the Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave 2 Dora Milaje, mine below retail shipped, minus her M'Baku BAF piece. I'm having a hard time resisting the rest of the wave as I already have T'Chaka ,but you never know- that first wave was fantastic. The Dora Milaje is the Wakandan royal guard, this figure including three portraits for diverse army building.

Included are weapon accessories we've already seen with better paint packed with Nakia and Okoye likely compromised for the price of the three aforementioned portraits. The buck is an outright repaint of Nakia- likely a disappointment of some, but it makes sense fiscally and thematically. Don't think Hasbro would miss an opportunity to capitalize on that very specific tooling!

All the Marvel Legends Black Panther stuff from the last year has been just outstanding. Hasbro hit a new high mark with these unique and beautiful action figures, continuing the upward trend of their Marvel Legends line. I hear a lot of complaints from the action figure community, but for a $20.00  mass-produced figure (often less if you are patient and smart), they are hard to beat.

Marvel Legends T'Chaka

While I like the 2nd Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave, I'm not sure I want to buy them all. T'Chaka was the one I was most interested in, acquiring him through an Amazon Warehouse Deal, shipped to my home for the same price I'd pay at retail. That's assuming I'd see him at all- unlike the first Black Panther Wave last year, I have yet to see the second wave. Some of the figures are fetching a price of ten or more dollars above retail. Mine came with slightly damaged packaging, but I didn't care about that!

The tribal skirt is the star of this release, but the new head for T'Chaka is nice as well- he's a mix of the Civil War Black Panther, and either Mordo or Dr. Strange for the legs, but it works.

He shares his black and gold scheme with Killmonger from the first Black Panther wave. I may have liked that figure more than the Black Panther. Amazing detail and articulation! Neither of these came with an unmasked head, though we now have a couple Erik Killmonger portraits from other releases.

And of course, a shot of T'Challa with Killmonger and T'Chaka is in order. We have been getting some great Black Panther figures from Hasbro in the last couple years, and these are probably the best, certainly in the sculpt, which are beautifully detailed.

I must say, I wouldn't mind having three of the Dora Milaje figures from this line, with their three head portraits- they'd make a great army build behind Nakia and Okoye from the first Marvel Legends Black Panther wave. Absolutely loved those figures- a beautiful pair! Of note, you can use Killmonger's hands for T'Chaka to grip any borrowed accessory from either waves.

12" Marvel Legends Black Panther

I'd been building up some points for a few months, and cashed in on this Amazon Warehouse deal, the 12" Marvel Legends Black Panther. At south of twenty-five bucks shipped, it was a solid deal. The package was damaged, but I was going to pluck him anyway. He may have been returned for his warped right arm, commonplace in this figure, which was easily fixed with a hairdryer and cold water bath.  I loved the 6" Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave, and Klaw/Shuri 2-pack, and this big Panther is the pride of them all. Check out the video:

The paint is good on the big Panther, but the sculpt is sublime, the minutiae of etched detail in the suit artfully rendered, The portrait of T'Challa/actor Chadwick Boseman is almost plain by comparison, but is effective enough- at least the skin tone improved from the 6" Panther. His shoulders don't allow for  complete vertical positioning against the torso, but the articulation is otherwise exceptional. There's no waist swivel, but the torso joint makes up for that, and the butterfly shoulder joints are great for a character like Black Panther- bonus points for the great toe joints! The extra hands, head, and spear round out this a fantastic figure! Recommended!

The 12" and 6" Black Panthers make a fun BIG TOY/little toy scenario!

Marvel Legends 2017 Walmart Exclusive Black Panther

On the heels of my last post, I thought I'd share my third Black Panther action figure acquired in the last couple months. This was an update to the 2013 Rocket Raccoon Series Black Panther, receiving a cape, extra hands, necklace, and spear. I never got that 2013 Black Panther, so this is like a second chance. I've seen some of my Instagram friends find him on clearance, but I don't recall seeing him in the wild, eventually buying him for a pretty good price with free shipping from an eBay seller.

The cape was actually borrowed from the 2008 Red Hulk Wave's Adam Warlock, and the spear from the 2015 Rhino Wave's Kraven. Not sure where the necklace came from, but would be surprised if it wasn't a recycle of some sorts, the origin of which I cannot determine.

The elbows are a little rubbery on this guy, and the wrist posts are a little too slender- I could see the latter being a problem if changing the hands often, but mine probably got changed more photographing him than he'll get the rest of his time in my collection.

Another mild issue worth noting is the noticeable gap in the abdominal hinge. Built on the Bucky Cap body, I've heard speculation by some YouTube reviews that this six year old mold had worn with age. But I've seen reference photos at MarvelLegends.Net that show gappage, so I feel it's always been an issue with that buck, perhaps less pronounced on Black Panther due to his plain torso. All said, this is a pretty cool action figure! He has good accessories, even if recycled, which are suitable with this comic-inspired interpretation of the character.

Black Panther with Marvel Legends Shuri that came in a 2pk with Klaw I reviewed last week-
What a great pair!

Marvel Legends Klaw/Shuri 2pk & Vibranium Suit Black Panther

I posted the photo above on my Instagram at the end of January, and finally got around to photographing them last week. I'll say again, the recent Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave was one of the best in my opinion, and this TRU Exclusive Klaw/Shuri 2pk and Walmart Exclusive Vibranium Suit Black Panther are icing on the cake. Really fun! Check out the video:

Below, Shuri with the Black Panther Wave Okoye and Nakia,
and Black Panther Wave Black Panther with Vibranium Suit Black Panther:

It's little wonder that I've become interested in Marvel Legends again considering their output in the last few years. In addition to some great movie figures, the comics-inspired offerings have been fun as well, these included. I've heard gentle complaints regarding Vibranium Black Panther's lack of butterfly joints, but this buck introduced on Spider-UK is a pretty good fit. I'm concerned about the delicate ankles on Shuri, but she looks great in her cape draped over her shoulders and the spear was a good reuse of parts, borrowed from Kraven. Redesigned from his 2012 appearance in Marvel Legends celebrated return, Klaw is a huge improvement while simultaneously retaining the character's classic design.

Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave

I'd preordered the Invincible Iron Man from this wave in December, convinced I could resist buying the entire Marvel Legends Black Panther Series, but the Nakia and Okoye BAF were just to beautiful to ignore. I didn't mind getting a classic Sub-Mariner, and the Black Panther and Erik Killmonger turned out to be a pleasant surprise- check out the video:

2017 was definitely a return to Marvel Legends for myself, and there are some gems in this wave- all the extra heads, hands and accessories really made it great! Black Bolt doesn't do much for me, but Inhumans enthusiasts can couple him with the Walgreens Exclusive Medusa now. I'd have a hard time picking a favorite, but the Nakia and Okoye BAF ended up on top for myself- all the details in sculpt are outstanding...
