McFarlane Toys Super Powers Classic Superman

There is just something toyetic about this new Super Powers Classic Superman by McFarlane Toys- appealing to kids of all ages. I haven't purchased but a handful of these new Super Powers figures, 'cause you can't just have everything you like, but I could not pass on this. While I had outgrown toys by the time the original Kenner Super Powers figures dropped in 1984, I am fond of their classic depictions of the heroes featured in DC Comics of the Bronze-Age -my sweet spot. Their seven points of articulation severely limit their poseability, and purists lament the absence of their former action features, but I do like their styling. This classic Superman looks so appealing on his cardback that I have just been displaying him like that. McFarlane Toys Super Powers Batman & Superman

I've somehow avoided buying many of these McFarlane Super Powers figures- the kind of retro-styled action figure I'm into. But I missed the Kenner Super Powers of the '80s, having outgrown toys by the time they were released in 1984. I may not have the strongest nostalgia for the line, but I do like these. These have 7 points of articulation, none of which are swivels in the ankles, so you won't get them in any crazy poses. This Batman/Superman pair are variants I was attracted to- the Superman styled after the 1940s "Max Fleisher" Superman, and the dark blue Batman stamped with an extra-wide bat chest insignia that reminded me of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns.

I did pick up a fantastic Super Powers Nightwing and Batman last January that I love...

...I also found a Manga Batman I keep on card...

I loved the Big Lots Exclusive Mego Superman that came out last year,
also an obvious homage to the Max Fleisher animated Superman series of the 1940s...

McFarlane Toys Super Powers Manga Batman

I haven't bought many of these McFarlane Toys Super Powers figures, but this Manga Batman was to good to pass up with his unique styling and fantastic backing card art. Pictured below are the Super Powers Batman and Nightwing I picked up last January:

I'm keeping this figure on the cardback for now, stuffed onto the Batman shelf in my glass detolf cabinet- yes, it's obscured by the huge 13" DC Direct Batman Beyond figure, but that's a favorite of mine from way back. Other figures of note in the photo below: 8" Mego 50th Anniv. Batman, 10.5" Applause Batman Returns vinyl figure, 9" Hasbro Masterpiece Edition 1st Appearance Batman, and my 10.5" Sofubi Vinyl Batman by Medicom.

Super Powers Batman & Nightwing

I've so far avoided buying every one of these McFarlane Toys Super Powers figures, but had to pick up the all-black Batman and Nightwing figures back in December. They don't have the action features the Kenner figures had back in the '80s, but I love their retro styling.

Below, Super Powers Batman with my 1990 Kenner Shadow Wing Batman, which has a great action feature and a better sculpt than the McFarlane Batman, modeled after actor Michael Keaton's cinematic Batman...

I was particularly won over by this Nightwing in one of his earlier "Knightfall" outfit...

There aren't a lot of posing options with these figures due to their very basic articulation, but I really enjoy their simple, retro charm. I didn't have any Super Powers figures as a kid, as I'd just moved into my early teen years when Kenner introduced the original line, but I can certainly appreciate them.

Super Powers Batman and Nightwing join my ever evolving collection of assorted toys on the Batman shelf of my detolf display cabinet...
