Masters of the WWE Rey Mysterio

I was really happy to find the Masters of the WWE Rey Mysterio at retail price on Walmart.com- many of this MOTU/WWE mashup series were hard to come by due to spotty distribution. I hate that the line came to an end recently as they complemented my MOTU Origins collection so well. I passed on the first blue/red/yellow version a couple years ago, but this second silver version is even better. I absolutely love this figure! The card was mangled due to it being shipped in a bag, but I don't care much about that.

While I know almost nothing about the WWE, I think tying this line in with the New MOTU figures and their interchangeable parts was a great move on Mattel's part- lots of fun! Rey was a mashup with Masters of the Universe Stratos, one of the original MOTU figures I had back in the '80s. I loved the updated MOTU Origins Stratos, which was nearly indistinguishable from the original to my memory.

See my post on the MOTU Origins Castle Grayskull!

The jet pack's design is different from the MOTU Origins Stratos, but this second verion of Rey Mysterio shares the same wings. The arm bands add flair, and the torso, pelvic, and thigh tampographs are fantastic- he looks great with or without the jet pack.

And finally, Rey Mysterio with the other Masters of the WWE figures in my collection: Ultimate WarriorMr. TRoman ReignsRicky "The Dragon" SteamboatKane, and Jake the Snake!

Masters of the WWE Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

Stumbled onto another of the elusive Masters of the WWE figures at a local Walmart this weekend, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Heroic Master of Dragons! While I'm not a follower of wrestling, the mashup of MOTU and WWE are fantastic, many blending right in with my Masters of the Universe Origins collection. I love the colors on The Dragon, and the Merman chest harness fits great with his overall aesthetic. For whatever reason, Ricky checked out for $10.44 at the register, a few dollars less that the $14.95 these figures are more typically priced. The Dragon Blaster accessory is unfortunately a total waste of plastic, barely able to hang on the figures back, and otherwise useless- I'd have preferred some weapons, such as nunchacku or bo staff...

The Masters of the WWE come with a mini comic, shorter than the MOTU Origins figures, with a cross sell sheet on back showing other figures in the wave...

I feel like this pole axe from my Funko Primal Age Batcave playset
is a more suiting weapon for "The Dragon ...!

Below, Ricky Steamboat with the other Masters of the WWE figures in my collection:

Aside from the Dragon Blaster accessory, Ricky Steamboat makes a great addition to my collection. I hope to see more of these figures more readily available in the future. Mattel and Walmart have a lot of room for improvement regarding distribution of both MOTU Origins and Masters of the WWE figures, which is a shame because they are some of the best toys out recently. Their interchangeable parts, playability, and retro charm are undeniable. Recommended!

Masters of the WWE Mr. T

I don't normally contribute to the economy of eBay action figure scalpers, but the distribution of both the MOTU Origins and Masters of the WWE action figure lines have been hit or miss, often a miss regarding the latter. As the months wore on, I came to terms with having seen very little of the wave Mr. T was part of, and bit the bullet. A child of the '70s and '80s, Mr. T was certainly part of the pop culture kool-aid I was drinking, and the figure I wanted most from this line.

Mr. T gets both the fisted gauntlet that the MOTU Origins Fisto includes, as well as a chopping guantlet the the recently solicited Jitsu will likely come with. I love the interchangeability of parts between these lines- smart toy designing that adds a lot of play value!

Like other figures in this line, Mr. T's armor can be removed, more or less changing him to a more straight-up wrestling figure. I love his colorful outfit, and the head sculpt is perfection!

I did manage to find my Masters of the WWE Jake the Snake on the pegs months ago, wave mate to Mr. T, and another favorite from this unexpectedly fun action figure line. See my recent post on the Masters of the WWE Kane and MOTU Origins Castle Grayskull as well!

My Masters of the WWE Roman Reigns shares the same fisted gauntlet as Mr. T...

I love both of these corresponding action figure lines, and have more to share! Recommended!

Masters of the WWE Kane

I haven't bought every Masters of the WWE figure I've seen in the wild, but have picked up a few that fit most seamlessly with my ever-growing MOTU Origins collection. Kane categorically resembled that aesthetic, as though he were just another Masters of the Universe villain. I did like the other WWE figures in this wave, who were also a good fit in my MOTU Origins collection, but not in the way Kane the Demonic Red Machine does!

A pistol and blast effect were included, as was a short mini comic with an illustrated cross sell ad for other figures in the wave, just like MOTU of the '80s. It appears Kane's robotic right arm will swap parts with the MOTU Origins Roboto I have on ice; I love interchangeable parts between these lines- great design for unlimited playablity!

If you collect Masters of the WWE or MOTU Origins, the Funko Primal Age Batcave is a must-have- I love mine almost as much as my new MOTU Origins Castle Grayskull! I had the original Castle Grayskull and the Dungeons and Dragons Fortress of Fangs as a kid in the '80s, so this Batcave stirs my nostalgia for playsets of that era.

Masters of the WWE Universe Jake the Snake Roberts

I started paying more attention to these Masters of the WWE Universe figures after discovering Mattel's MOTU Origins line, which share the same modular/interchangeable parts, allowing customization of your figures between lines. It was brilliant for Mattel to engineer these figures this way! I'm almost completely out of the loop regarding the characters of the WWE, but some of these fit so seamlessly into the Origins line, it's like having another MOTU figure. Like the origins figures, the WWE figures get a minicomic foldout cross-sell sheet showing other figures in the wave- really want the Mr. T!

Jake's removeable faceplate reveals his serpentine facial features, the MOTU callback being the Snake Face character from the '80s. He comes with a rubber snake, and his armor can be removed to expose a scaled chest- he'll be displayed in my collection like this!

Below, Skeletor with Panthor and Beastman welcoming The Snake into their Lair of Evil,
the Funko Primal Age Batcave! While I can hardly wait for the MOTU Origins Castle Grayskull, the Funko Batcave has it's own charms, and fits my MOTU Origins figures perfectly. Seriously, if you don't have this playset, go buy it now- I predict they will increase in value because of the recent MOTU merchandise push.

Masters of the WWE Universe Ultimate Warrior

I didn't expect to find this highly sought after Masters of the WWE Universe Wave 1 Ultimate Warrior so late in the game for such a great price. I've only seen Wave 2 hanging around the pegs in my area the last couple months, and not a sign of the forthcoming Wave 3 and 4. I've said before that I don't really follow the WWE, but I loved Masters of the Universe back in the '80s, and I love the wacky mashup of these two properties!

Ultimate Warrior's Spear of Champions and Ultimate Energy Harness comfortably pin him within the Masters of the Universe aesthetic, the latter of which can be removed to expose the tattoo on his chest. I love the colors, and think the arm bands across his biceps give him a savage look. He'll look right at home next to your MOTU Origins He-Man!

Like the MOTU Origins figures, the Masters of the WWE figures come with a short mini-comic very much in the spirit of the original Masters of the Universe figures. Those first mini-comics illustrated by Alfred Alcala were much longer however, including a narrative and multiple pages of illustrated action that I was fascinated by as a child.

Ultimate Warrior looks right at home atop my MOTU Origins Battle Cat!

... and my MOTU Origins Beastman makes a nemesis for Ultimate Warrior ...!

And finally, Ultimate Warrior with Masters of the WWE Universe Roman ReignsWhat appealed to me about both these figures was how seamlessly they both fit in with the MOTU Origins line. I'm open to collecting a few more of these to complement my collection and do battle in and around the new MOTU Origins Castle Grayskull coming next spring!
