Superior Spider-Man #2

While picking up the 2nd printing of Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 last week at the Fantasy Shop, I grabbed the second issue of  Superior Spider-Man, which did not disappoint. Writer Dan Slott's handling of Otto Octavius living out Peter Parker/Spider-Man's life explores a lot of both comedic and downright uncomfortable possibilities. The ghost of Parker cannot believe Jonah Jameson's public reconciliation with Spider-Man, posthumous of Parker's years of selfless duty and now under Otto's self-serving direction. Parker must also endure witnessing Otto trying to make time with Mary Jane, a cuckold scenario that leaves one slightly queasy until the good-hearted girlfriend says goodnight after each attempt.

Realizing more energy needs put into his pursuit of Parker's pretty girlfriend, Otto manufactures hundreds of spider-bots to watch over New York, so he could survey security issues ahead of time and decide if the threat was worthy of his attention.

When the Vultures' winged henchmen invade Mary Jane's nightclub in search of a hidden item in the villain's old address, she is thrown from a window. Otto arrives on the scene in the nick of time thanks to his spider-bot surveillance, safely catching Peter's girlfriend in a webbed net between the buildings. Realizing the girl's endangerment due to her relations with Spider-Man, Otto unexpectedly breaks it off with Mary Jane, surprising and frustrating Peter's ghost. But on the last page we discover that a certain friend from Parker's past is suspicious of his change in personality, and plans to get to the bottom of things...! It was obvious that Peter would find a way back in the first issue of Superior Spider-Man of course, but how will things play out? Will the book go on under the same title? Who knows?! One thing's for certain: this Spider-Fan will be reading Superior Spider-Man 3 & 4, both coming out in February. Excelsior!

  2. In all my years of reading Spidey I have survived alot of goofy things like the Clone Wars and the ONE MORE DAY fiasco but this one is going to be interesting I think. Many people hate it but I have to know how it all plays out.
