Marvel Legends Dump -August 2023

I didn't get all of these figures in August, but most of them I did, so I felt it was a good time to dump a bunch of them onto the blog!

Spider-Man 2 (Gamerverse)
I was disappointed in missing out on the first Gamerverse Spider-Man at GameStop a couple years ago, so getting this upgraded model was sweet. He came with several web accessories and has all the articulation you'd want in a Spider-Man figure, including a toe joint.

Quantumania Ultron
I'm not sure why Ultron was in this wave, but collectors who missed out on the Classic Ultron we got in 2021 with the Ursa Major BAF Wave will be glad to see him. His head sculpt is slightly different, and he is sculpted in that swirly metallic plastic instead of painted silver. Below, Quantumania Ultron pictured with Disney + What-If... Ulton BAF and my Classic Ultron...

Guardians of the Galaxy Yondu
I hate exclusives as much as the next collector, but I didn't have any problem preordering this Target Exclusive Yondu. What a presentation- live the color on this figure! He pairs nicely with the Walmart Exclusive Star-Lord we just got!

Moon Knight (Modern)
I've been a fan of Moon Knight since reading about him in Spectacular Spider-Man back in the '70s, and this modern interpretation hits all the right notes. I'm unsure what I'm supposed to do with the extra-small crescent accessories he came with, but he was packed with other useful weapons.

Heroes Return Iron Man/Model 01 Iron Man
How many Iron Man figures does a Marvel Legends collector need? Apparently two more!

Avengers: Beyond Earth's Mightiest Heroes Captain Marvel Vs. Doctor Doom 2pk
I read Secret Wars back in the '80s and was particularly fixated on this version of Doctor Doom that looks like the Mattel Secret Wars figure I had then. I was thrilled to see this set solicited a few months ago, and it did not disappoint!

Hasbro went all the way with Doom, including a Victor Von Doom head sculpt, collapsed hoodie accessory, and mask so we can relive issue #11 of Secret Wars "The Face of Doom" like it's 1985! So good ...!

Avengers: Beyond Earth's Mightiest Heroes Black Widow
And finally, a figure I picked up while shooting the rest of these, the newest Marvel Legends Black Widow. I passed on this figure in a local Target a couple weeks ago, but circled back to scoop her up- with three head sculpts, pinless joints (double hinged elbows as well), and all her other weapons/accessories, she is the Black Widow to have in your collection.

The 2018 Marvel Legends Black Widow also had an alternate head with a '60s/retro hairdo ...

I'd have a difficult time choosing a favorite out of this bunch, but it might be the Secret Wars Doom Vs. Captain Marvel 2-pk. I'd love to have a 12" version of that Doom! Honorable mentions to the Model 01 Iron Man, Yondu, and Black Widow, but they are all pretty fantastic. Marvel Legends have become more expensive, but they often rival import-quality figures in the last few years.

Marvel Legends Toei/Tokusatsu Spider-Man

I had no childhood nostalgia for this Toei/Tokusatsu version of Spider-Man, never having learned about the Japanese Spider-Man as an adult- ironically, '78-'79 would have been a high point for Spider-Man as a child, playing with my Mego Spider-Man and reading his comics then. The similarities between the Japanese and American Spider-Man pretty much ends at the suit, but the character, Takuya Yamashiro, appeared in the Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Verse story, and will return in the forthcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse this June. I liked the figure for the realism of the figure's physique and the folds and creasing in his mask and outfit, making his seem like a more realistic, classic Spider-Man. Perhaps such a character in our universe would only have one clunky webshooter ...?

I didn't have any Hasbro Power Rangers to compare with this Toei Spider-Man but did have a Goldar from the Lighting Collection to do battle with Takuya- authentically Tokusatsu, if I say so myself ...!

I imagine Herald of Thunder Thor commandeering Godar's power sward from Toei Spider-Man after the villain's defeat ... a weapon not intended for mortal men ...!

I feel the Simu Liu head from my Marvel Legends Shang-Chi is a pretty good fit on the Toei Spider-Man -maybe a little big, but not terrible. I still haven't seen the movie, but I liked that Marvel Legends wave a lot...

I also like the Zombie Hunter Spidey from the Marvel Legends What If ...? Wave...

I've really enjoyed some of the latest Marvel Legends Spider-Man figures- below, Toei Spider-Man with Renew Your Vows Spidey, Amazing Fantasy Spider-Man, and Iron Spider...

Marvel Legends Amazing Fantasy Spider-Man

I must have over twenty different Marvel Legends Spider-Man figures now, right?? This 60th Anniversary Amazing Fantasy Spider-Man piqued my interest upon its solicitation months ago though, so I knew this day would be inevitable. I ordered him off Target with another figure for $17.68 each, and free shipping. This figure retails for $26.49 here in the Midwest, and the Thor I picked up $22.99. With prices like that, I will take advantage when I can, and Black Friday Sales are worth looking at.

Spidey is a nice-looking figure with a youthful buck that is a little smaller than the medium sized male figures in the Marvel Legends line. I'm sure we are all tired of the enclosed packaging, but this is the way it is going, and despite complaints about the box art, I like the design overall. Hasbro did load up on three extra pairs of hands, two sets of web wings, and a web rope. Another head with the Ditko pupiled eyes would have been a nice edition, but it's a really nice figure with fantastic articulation. The web wings can be tricky to keep pegged onto the arms while posing, but they do have a cool effect once mastered- the I prefer the relaxed/hanging pair, but the flight pair are nice to have.

I am having a blast shooting with the NECA Street Scene Diorama I just got-
perfect for a character like Spider-Man ...

There has been a great deal of comparison between this Amazing Fantasy Spider-Man and the Renew Your Vows Spider-Man that came with Spinneret- they are the newest and best Marvel Legends Spider-Man figures out right now, probably the best in the Marvel Legends line's history. They are just different flavors to me, and think they are both fantastic!

I have a couple other Marvel Legends Spider-Man figures with web wings, the Spider-Man: Homecoming Spidey, and the ToyBiz 1st Appearance Spider-Man. The web wings on this Amazing Fantasy figure work better than the Homecoming figure, and that old ToyBiz figure has never lost his fabric wings. While our newer Marvel Legends Spider-Man figures have great articulation and more realistic sculpts, I do love the charm of that old ToyBiz figure...

I'm of course going to get my new Marvel Legends Rhino out with the new Spider-Man figure! Rhino was an early Spider-Man villain, first appearing in Amazing Spider-Man #41 in 1966. John Romita had just taken over drawing Spider-Man, only a couple issues before when Steve Ditko left.

Ditko did invent the character Vulture, however, appearing in issue #2, 1963. The wings on that figure can be tricky when posing as well, but what a classic Vulture- I loved that Spider-Man/Demogoblin BAF Wave he came in!

This is a fantastic Spider-Man figure that would give a lot of imports a run for their money, even with Hasbro's recently steep price increases. I've said before that Hasbro has to be noticing the prices imports are going for, and they want some of that action. I do feel like we are getting the best Marvel Legends figures ever, and at a fraction of the imports price. Recommended!
